What are common skin conditions associated with aging?

Aging breaks down the skin and the soft tissues underneath. The amount of collagen produced by the body decreases, causing the skin and tissues to lose their elasticity. In addition to wrinkles, aging can cause the skin to begin to dry out and become rougher. With the moisture and collagen decreasing on a regular basis, the skin can begin to droop, especially over the eyes and along the jawline. Additionally, the skin may start to thin and take on a translucent appearance. As the skin begins to deteriorate, it may chap more easily, especially if the person spends several hours a day outside.

What causes sunspots?

Sunspots, liver spots, or age spots are caused by an excess amount of melanin or pigment collected in one place. Sunspots that appear on the skin become visible on areas of the body that have been exposed to direct sunlight for several hours. It’s the same basic process as tanning, where the skin becomes darker the longer the person remains in the sun. The main difference is that with a sunspot, the melanin and pigments collect in one particular area, creating a well-defined blemish or freckle.
